How-To Create a Variety of Texture Patterns
The creative effect of decorative walls is unlimited. Stipple and swirl patterns can be created with sponges, trowels, whiskbrooms, or our texture roller. From traditional stucco looks to trendy geometric patterns, decorative textures compliment décor themes and can create a distinctive look.
There are different techniques used to create each of these decorative texture patterns.
Supplies (Not all are needed) :
- Roll-On/Spray-On Texture
- Primer
- Sea Sponge
- Trowel
- Whisk broom
- Texture Roller
Steps :
For a Stipple/Knockdown:
- Prime drywall.
- Mix Roll-On/Spray-On Texture (available at your local hardware store) and apply per directions with the Homax Texture Roller.
- For the knockdown, use a mud knife to gently knockdown the stipple pattern after drying for 10 minutes.
For the following patterns, start by applying Roll-On/Spray-On texture with a roller or trowel per instructions. Flatten first with a mud knife and then choose from the following applications.
"Wheat" Stripe Pattern:
Create vertical straight lines using a whiskbroom.
"Art Deco" Swirl:
Use a wallpaper brush or whiskbroom to repeat swirl effects, working from top to bottom.
"Spanish" Trowel:
Use a trowel in a random arc motion. Vary pressure and stroke length.
"Free-form" Canvas:
Use a water-dampened sea sponge in a random pattern.
One hint to remember when working with any of these texture patterns is to use a fine spray mist of water to extend your working time.
Remember the possibilities are endless, create your own type of decorative texture pattern, and just let your imagination run wild. So, whether you are applying texture for its practical uses or to add a decorative touch to the room, remember it is easy to do.
