Apply Knockdown Texture

Maybe you don’t want to do the traditional "Orange Peel" splatter, another option is knockdown textures. The term "knockdown" comes from the technique used to knock the top of the splatter down for a unique look. Knockdown textures are ideal for creating a "regional" look. Whether you’re look for a southwest look or the boldness of a heavier Mediterranean texture, a knockdown is a great choice.

Supplies :

Steps :

  1. Protect surrounding area using drop cloth.
  2. Make any necessary wall repairs using the spackling compound, and then prime drywall.
    • For this mid-sized project we are using the DIY Spray Texture Gun. Attach bottle of Premixed Spray Texture to the Spray Texture Gun. Follow directions on bottle - be sure to uncap small "breather" cap and punch breather hole in bottle.
  3. Adjust settings for desired texture patterns. (Directions included with the gun elaborate on what adjustments to make for your desired spray pattern.)
  4. Test spray pattern on cardboard surface, to determine if you have achieved the desired spray setting.
  5. Spray texture onto surface. Again, it is important to only apply to cover 70-80% of the surface. The DIY Spray Texture is a manual gun, and does not require a power source. Each full pump stroke will spray an area approximately 6 inches by 3 feet.
  6. To achieve the knockdown look, allow texture to set for about 10 minutes.
  7. Then hold a wide mud knife vertically, allowing the blade to rest gently against the surface and draw the knife downward in all directions, letting it glide over the splatter.
  8. Let dry, and paint. You have successfully achieved a beautiful knockdown texture.
