Mud and Tape Drywall

Mud and Tape Drywall

How-To Mud and Tape Drywall

Nobody would claim that taping drywall is a neat job...slapping mud onto a drywall seam with a mud knife can be very messy. But the Drywall Taping Tool, on the other hand, holds both mud and tape, and applies it only as needed. So not only will you save time, but you won’t have a major clean up job when you are finished.

You are probably thinking that there has to be a catch...there isn’t. The Taping Tool doesn’t require any special skills. No guessing at how much mud to apply or trying to smooth out heavily mudded areas with a mud knife. The Taping Tool does all that for you. If you follow the easy steps outlined below, you should have no problem applying the drywall tape.

Supplies :

  • Homax Drywall Taping Tool
  • All Purpose Drywall Taping Compound
  • Topping Compound
  • Drywall Tape
  • 10-12" Drywall Knife
  • Drywall Sander

Steps :

  1. Apply Bedding Coat:

Use the Homax Drywall Taping Tool to apply thinned all-purpose drywall compound and paper tape over seams (you can find this at your local home center). Use a 4" taping knife to smooth and remove excess mud. Let dry 24 hours.

  2. Apply 1st TopCoat:

Now, with unthinned all-purpose drywall compound and a 6" taping knife, apply a thin coat of mud over taped seam. Let dry 24 hours and sand lightly.
  3. Apply 2nd TopCoat:

Finally, apply 2nd topcoat using a "Topping Compound" and a 10-12" taping knife. Let dry 24 hours. Lightly sand smooth so that it blends in with the rest of the wall.

That’s it. Then you can mud over nail holes, sand and you are ready to texture.
